Today I want to look at how scientific computing evolved since the year Mathematica-25 (1963) when I first started doing scientific computing. This will be a somewhat personal history focusing on the effects of the evolution of

I will try to give you a feel for the computing environment of the time illustrated by a few anecdotes and perhaps a few judgemental comments if time permits. This will lead to a discussion of several of what I consider to be watershed events in scientific computing - including the 1988 introduction of Mathematica.
