Steve and Jim Pirch - November 29, 2003 at Augustana College, Illinois
Jim was my junior high science teacher. He was the best teacher I had
in my first twelve years of school.
I owe my start in science
to his amazingly generous help.
Here we are in 1964 from the John Deere Junior High Yearbook.
This is the Moline Public Library in downtown Moline, Illinois as
it is in 2003. Except for the cars, wheelchair ramp, and a few
other things, it is the same place I practically lived during
summers in Junior High. I would walk the six miles total there and back from
my house every other day to get an arm load of books and records.
I finally ran out of books I wanted to read and had to start getting
books
from other sources.
This is my science fair project from my sophomore year in high school.

This is my science fair project from my senior year in high school.
This is the Moline High School debate team for 1967.
I am the very skinny guy with the glasses in the second row,
two from the right. The girl at my left is Dawn Seeds (now Ratzburg)
who was also my physics lab partner then and great friend ever since.
Here I am with our physics class my senior year on our way to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Again, I am the skinny guy with the glasses, dark sweater and light pants near the center right of the photo. Dawn is in the center.
This is Sandy Bergstrand, the first girl I asked out on a date
in high school. Poor Sandy, she had to put up with me talking
about nuclear magnetic resonance.
Here I am sitting at a computer card key punch in one of the physics labs
at Augustana College in the Summer of 1970. I ran the college's computer
lab at night during my years at Augustana starting in 1967.
This is a photo taken in the Summer of 1971 during my first
graduate school trip to Europe. This is in Trieste, Italy
at the Theoretial Physics Institute there. In the photos
from left to right are Elaine Tsiang, Lane Hughston, me, and
Larry Smarr. In the bottom photo Larry is replaced by
Bryce Dewitt, our teacher and mentor.
These are the members of the King's College Applied Mathematics
Group
in London in 1976. I am in the front row, three from
the left.
This is a group photo of a conference I went to in the Spring of 1980
at Imperical College in London. The big round building is the famous
Albert Hall concert venue. I am at the edge of the photo on the left
in the blue shirt. You might recognize Stephen Hawking in the front.
Here I am in front of our house January 2004. I am running about three miles
a day now and have dropped the extra weight I had at the stepson Jonathan's
wedding in June.
